Western Illinois University’s Homecoming 2012 is in full swing this week, and more events are approaching quickly for WIU alumni on September 21-22. This year’s Homecoming theme is Cirque Du Western: The Carnival Never Ends.
Associate Director Amanda Shoemaker told me all about the exciting activities planned for this weekend. “We have a social at the Alumni House from 5-10 p.m. [on Friday, September 21st]. It is a great way to kick off the weekend because we’ve always had this event at the Alumni House. [Alumni] know it’s a good place to go and to reconnect with old friends,” she said.
Shoemaker continued, “On Saturday morning we have a 5K run called the Old Stompin’ Ground Runaround. It’s not just for alumni; anyone can run or walk in this race,” she said. Registration for the 26th annual 5K Run/2 mile walk begins at 7 a.m. Saturday morning and it closes at 7:45 a.m., all at the Alumni House. The run/walk begins at 8 a.m. Runners and walkers can vie for a trophy and earn bragging rights.
After the run, stop by the Alumni House for a continental breakfast of doughnuts, coffee, juice, and hot chocolate. Then, WIU alumni and friends can gather on the front lawn of the Alumni House and watch the parade. “After the breakfast is about when the parade will come through. It usually arrives in [front of the Alumni House] by 11 a.m.,” Shoemaker explained. “When the Marching Leathernecks come through, they stop and play for the crowd on the Alumni House [lawn].”
A new location has been set up for the luncheon at The Right Place Tent. “The Right Place Tent is in a brand new location this year,” Shoemaker expressed. “It is open from 12-3 p.m. It used to be west of Hanson Field, but now it is north of Hanson Field sectioned between the field and Q-Lot. At the tent, alumni and friends can visit with faculty and staff from all the colleges and some campus departments. Once 3 p.m. rolls around, the Leatherneck football team will face ISU,” she said.
An Alumni Social and Reunion Recognition Event will close out the weekend on Saturday night. Classes of 1962, 1972, and 1987 will be celebrated. You can attend, along with the Reunion attendees, from 6-8:30 p.m. During the evening, all attendees will be introduced.
