Family Weekend at WIU is here, and it is a lot earlier than what WIU students and their families are used to in comparison to past years. WIU’s Family Weekend kicks off in Macomb today and runs through Sunday, Sept. 9. Several events are being coordinated to keep the families and students entertained.
Titus Young, Vice President of University Union Board (UUB), explains the purpose of the student-run organization. “What UUB does is we plan all kinds of events: concerts, comedy [acts], slam poets, bingo, open mic nights, and even Homecoming [events]. We do a lot of events on campus which aim to fulfill the students’ wants and needs at a global level,” he said.
This year, Family Weekend is earlier than normal. Young explained, “we are having Family Weekend earlier because we wanted to do something different. It works out for families better. We weighed our options and tried to decide what the best situation is for everyone.”
Among the events taking place this weekend, “Whose Live Anyway?” will be at Western Hall. Tonight at 7:30, improv artists from the TV show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” will be returning to Macomb for the second year in a row.
Families have other options this weekend including Rocky’s 5K run, a children’s book sale, rock-climbing, and much more. The 26th annual Balloon Rally, which is one of the more popular events, also coincides with Family Weekend. “The Balloon Rally is always big,” Young remarked, “and we always have a large turnout.” The Balloon Rally occurs on Vince Grady Field at 6 p.m. on Friday, and 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday.
“We also have something new going on this year,” Young said, “A Journey tribute band will be performing during tailgating on Saturday,” he explained. “It’s free, and it goes from 1:30-2:30.”
